Writing File 2

Mamen sent this great resource to learn to write different kinds of texts at the advanced level: https://freeenglishlessonplans.com/tag/writing/

Below is the plan I had for the 2017-18 course, but after three years witnessing how few people actually put together their own writing files, I have a proposal for you all, and old students are also welcome to join us in this project. Read about it in the handout I’ll give in class. This one: Guidelines for the Writing File Project by M Ford (1 Word page). Of course, my proposal can be brushed up with your feedback!

At the beginning of the course, you should take the list below and check with old textbooks or notes anywhere (you can include talkingpeople.net – Enter – Writing) and put together a resource file where you have info on how to write those kinds of texts in terms of structure, layout and UL.

Writing Assignments this year

  • Online writings on this blog: comments (any time) + once a month practicing 100-word descriptions, 100-word reasoned opinions or 50-exact-word minisagas. These 3 types of texts involves practicing writing with word limits, developing creativity and rational argumentation.

Plus

A monthly assignment, based on our selection of which texts in our list you wish to learn to write, or to practice writing. We need to agree on this selection by mid-October, after small groups choose a kind of text, to explain in class how to write it at the beginning of each month. Then, individually…

  • 1 monthly piece, practicing the word limit in your final exams (for expresión or for interacciòn), to be handed in in the third week of each month. Starting in November.

You all need to practice the methodology I explain here, and remember to attach the Before Writing work you need to do (useful language, notes on structure, outline for writing the text). I will reject assignments that do not comply with this requirement. You see, this task is not to test your English: it’s to help you learn, and practice. So being “natural” about this particular task is not respectful with the purpose of the task. If you want to write freely, you can, but you need to make a proposal.
